The holy souls in purgatory are being made ready for heaven and cannot pray for themselves, but they can be helped by our prayers. In love we beg God's mercy to bring them swiftly to his glory.
The Prayer
O most compassionate Jesus,
have mercy on the souls in purgatory,
for whose redemption you took upon yourself our nature
and endured a bitter death.
Mercifully hear their sighs,
look with pity upon the tears they shed before you,
and by the power of your Passion,
release them from the pains due to their sins.
O most merciful Savior,
let your Precious Blood reach down to them
and shorten the time of their suffering.
Call them and admit them to your presence in heaven,
there to behold you face to face for ever. Amen.
Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May they rest in peace. Amen.
When to Pray This Prayer
In November, the month of the holy souls, on All Souls' Day, and whenever you remember the faithful departed.
