The Our Father (The Lord’s Prayer)

The Our Father is the prayer the Lord Jesus gave to his disciples when they asked him to teach them to pray. It is the perfect prayer, the summary of the whole Gospel.

The Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name;
thy kingdom come,
thy will be done
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
and forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us;
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
Amen.

When to Pray This Prayer

Every day, many times. It is prayed in the Mass, in the Rosary, and whenever we turn to God as our Father.

About This Prayer

Given by Christ himself (Matthew 6 and Luke 11), the Our Father has been at the heart of Christian prayer from the beginning. The Catechism devotes its final section to it.
