Grace After Meals

A family praying in thanks before a meal.
Grace Before Meal, Franz von Defregger (1875). Public domain.

Just as we ask God's blessing before we eat, we thank him when the meal is done. This short, traditional grace gives thanks for his gifts and remembers the souls of the departed.

The Prayer

We give you thanks, almighty God,
for all your benefits,
who live and reign, world without end.
Amen.

May the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.

When to Pray This Prayer

At the end of every meal, alone or with the family.

About This Prayer

The Church has always joined thanksgiving to the table. This grace, in use for centuries, reminds us that all we have, even our daily bread, is a gift from the hand of God.
