The Confiteor, 'I confess to almighty God', is the prayer of humble admission of sin that opens the Mass and disposes us to receive God's mercy.
The Prayer
I confess to almighty God
and to you, my brothers and sisters,
that I have greatly sinned,
in my thoughts and in my words,
in what I have done and in what I have failed to do,
through my fault, through my fault,
through my most grievous fault;
therefore I ask blessed Mary ever-Virgin,
all the Angels and Saints,
and you, my brothers and sisters,
to pray for me to the Lord our God.
Amen.
When to Pray This Prayer
At the beginning of Mass in the Penitential Act, and as a prayer of repentance at other times.
About This Prayer
The Confiteor confesses sin not only to God but to the whole communion of the Church, asking the prayers of Our Lady, the angels, and the saints.
