Saint Lucy of Syracuse, whose name means “light,” is the beloved patron of the blind and of those with diseases of the eyes, and a radiant witness of faith in the darkness of persecution. This prayer asks her intercession for the light of both body and soul.
Prayer to Saint Lucy
Saint Lucy, your beautiful name signifies light. By the light of faith which God bestowed upon you, increase and preserve his light in my soul, that I may avoid evil, be zealous in the doing of good, and detest nothing so much as the blindness and darkness of sin.
Relying on your goodness, O God, we humbly ask you, through the intercession of Saint Lucy, virgin and martyr, to give perfect vision to our eyes, that they may serve for your greater honour and glory, and the salvation of souls. Saint Lucy, hear our prayers and obtain our petitions (mention your request). Amen.
About Saint Lucy
Saint Lucy (died c. 304) was a young Christian woman of Syracuse in Sicily, martyred during the persecution of Diocletian. Ancient and much-loved, she is named in the Roman Canon of the Mass. Because her name means “light,” she has long been the patroness of the blind and of eyesight, and her December feast falls near the darkest days of the year, a sign of the light of Christ. Her feast is December 13.
